Thus Sundargarh worked as a meeting point of the tribal of three states.

A piece of land was obtained in 2009 with a goal in mind, 2011 some activities were started in the Center with resident members, and in 2016 the work was intensified with concrete programs and activities.

‘Sanskruti Kendra: Tribal Cultural and Research Center’ is the name of the Center and it looks forward to do a meaningful service of the tribal communities on socio-cultural grounds. Sanskruti Kendra

Tribal Cultural and Research Center

is one of the very significant institutions run by the India East Province of the Society of the Divine Word. In a time when tribal culture is facing alarming deterioration, this visionary endeavor is here to make a tangible contribution in the field of Protection, Preservation and Promotion of the Tribal Culture. However, a spirit of daring and creativity alone can lead this institution to its potential in order to serve the tribal people.

Reasonable facility for a meaningful apostolate is available at the center now. With a tribal library, an audio studio, a video lab, an outdoor stage and a multi-purpose hall at our disposal we have ample opportunities for a meaningful service. We have variety of programs to cater to various cultural and tribal needs. Our dream, however, is to raise a well-furnished tribal museum that would meet the long standing demand of the tribals of three adjacent states – Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

Sanskruti Kendra Tribal culture and research centre is an impactful initiative by India East Province of the Society of the Divine Word with the aim of promotion and preservation of tribal (indigenous) cultural identity by way of systematic research study and documentation. The impact of globalisation and digitalisation on the unique tribal way of living is unfathomable and it requires an appropriate approach and effective response for promotion and preservation of tribal culture.

The Sanskruti Kendra   has adopted research and documentation approach by which tribal culture is kept alive in the midst of the concept of global village. This centre also provides facilities for research on indigenous life. Through Sanskruti Kendra   tribals want to give to the world the message of democratic values, respect for environment and creation etc.

From the Former Director’s Desk

Sanskruti Kendra - Tribal Cultural and Research Centre was established by Eastern Indian Province of the Society of the Divine Word in 2013 at Panaspara, Sundargarh in Odisha, India in order to promote and preserve tribal cultures. The Centre is still in its infancy stage and needs the contribution and support of many people in order to do its mission. Educated tribals can contribute by articulating their thoughts and feelings in writing, or through songs, dance or art and also collect relevant information from their relatives and neighbours especially from knowledgeable elders. Tribal youth and children need to appreciate and cherish their culture and cultural values that would keep them close to  nature and the centre can play a proactive role for this noble task.

From the Former Assistant Director

Sanskruti Kendra is a noble initiative by us. It is exclusively meant for the research and study of the tribal community. I appreciate the way it has taken its shape.

My way of understanding is that nowadays only a few have the habit of reading books. Whereas they like to browse through their mobiles.  I would suggest to upload any material that is pertaining to tribal community or its related affairs in the SK websites.

Secondly, since the tribals of that area are facing land problems, solution desk can be opened in the institute and ask the society to appoint persons as staff members who deal with such issues.

Though the institute is academic oriented, practical solutions must be also the priority. Intellectual knowledge is fine, if such knowledge helps solve ground realities, it would be a noble contribution from the place.

Thirdly, losing one’s mother tongue is equal to losing one’s identity. Helping the present generation to learn their mother tongue would be a novel idea.
