The Padu Dance

The loss of a dance called Padu of the Khadia community can be considered as the loss of a unique treasure that brought a lot of joy to the tribe. It was unique because it was the simplest and easiest, most spontaneous and entertaining of all dances. Though, even during those days, it was not the most popular dance among the youth, it was rather one among the elders, who would, on their joyful moments in their courtyard would just get up wherever they would be, and start the song, the steps and the movement. A little sip of handia, the local drink, would enrich the dance enormously.

Jhadu:  The Broom

A short documentary film

Jhadu (The Broom) is a 9.11 minutes short documentary brought out by Sanskruti Kendra on the traditional broom which is made and used by the tribal people of the Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Its attractive look comes from arduous and artistic making process, and ultimately it not only serves as a thing that keeps the house and courtyard clean, but it serves as a simple decoration of a tribal house.

Daahaka Pani Nayo

Madwa Song Adapted

This is a Madwa song, meaning a song that is sung in the madwa or tribal marriage pandal that is erected on the occasion of any marriage rite related ceremonies. On the occasion of any marriage ceremony, men and women sitting in the pandal automatically divide themselves in two groups as they may be sitting, and start singing this and other madwa songs. These songs also are known as Durang or Nayo songs. They are sung while sitting in the madwa; they are normally never sung standing or in any other posture.

The First Step

With this vision in mind a program named Raising Tribal Writers Program was initiated in 2018. Poems written by tribal youth, students and the educated on tribal theme were collected from all over Sundargarh district and an anthology named The First Step published with 140 poems in it. It was a novel initiative to say the least, and the publication of the book was a matter of great joy for the tribal community.
